The Kano Society

Principles & Background

The Kano Society was established on 23rd of January 2000 by a number of senior judo players including ex-internationals. Their concern being that some of the elements of judo espoused by Jigoro Kano were no longer being taught or applied and as a result they were keen to promote the style of Judo that was prevalent in the past.

We have called this Traditional Judo’.

The Society is keen to work with other martial arts bodies with the aim of improving players understanding of judo traditions and making contest judo more attractive.  In order to do this the Kano Society seeks to maintain close links with the Kodokan in Japan, the original home of Judo
